Do I have to have an M.A. to apply for the Ph.D. program?
No. Some applicants have the M.A., but many do not.
Do you accept students to start in the Spring semester?
No, all students must start in the Fall semester.
Are applicants for the Ph.D. given preference over applicants for the M.A.?

What do I need to apply?

Can I send everything electronically?
You may send everything electronically except a transcript. You may the send a scan of your transcript for preliminary review but you must have an official paper transcript sent for your application to be considered.
Do I need to send you all my transcripts?
Send transcripts from a degree in progress and from places where you have already received a degree.
Is there anything I should do before contacting a faculty member?
Yes! First find out if the faculty member shares your research interests. Second, find out if he/she accepts graduate students and third, make sure you have read some of this person’s work.

How much does it cost to attend?

What about ETS school/department codes for the GRE and TOEFL?
Rice University code is 6609. Please use one of the following department codes for the GRE: 2701, 2702 or 2799; and if you need it, one of the following department codes for the TOEFL: 86 or 98. The school code is important but the others all go to the same place here at Rice.
