Financial Aid
Although the university does not offer funding for Master's only
candidates, Ph.D. graduate students are eligible for financial aid. The
award is usually both a tuition waiver and a stipend. Financial aid is
based on merit and, although no student is guaranteed the continuance
of his or her award, students who are accepted with a stipend and who
remain in good standing can expect to receive their stipend for five
years. Awards are renewed after the department graduate committee has
evaluated a student's performance. A limited amount of funding is
available for travel to conferences, to present papers, to conduct
research, and for summer language training. Students seeking such funds
should petition the graduate committee chair indicating the purposes of
the trip and the amount of money needed. Modest proposals have the most
chance of success. All students should consult the AHA's guide to
funding for historians and the various announcements that appear on the
bulletin board for outside sources of funding. The department considers
application to such sources as a positive sign of professional behavior.
