My dissertation examines the relationship between slavery and prostitution during the Antebellum period in the U. S. South. I aim to incorporate working-class women in the literature of urban slavery by investigating how prostitution and lewd culture was embedded in the social and cultural landscape of slave cities. I look at how various state authorities such as municipal governments, police, and military attempted to control and regulate the bodies of women engaging in prostitution.
