The human understanding of the natural and social world (science), and the human capacity and effort to remake that world for our own purposes (technology), are at the heart of this cluster. There are many kinds of knowledge, but science is arguably one of the most authoritative forms of knowledge we have today, and technology has been a central part of human history since at least the invention of fire. In a world increasingly dependent on--and deeply affected by--science and technology, studying the historical dynamics and transformations of these most remarkable of human constructions has never been more essential.
